If your next holiday is at a location where your pets aren’t welcome, then you will need to prepare them for their own doggy getaway at a suitable boarding kennel.

Book Boarding Kennels Early!

The first thing you should realize is that good quality dog kennels are quite popular – especially during the holiday season – and you will most likely need to book months in advance in order to secure a spot. So the time to start your search is now.

Word of mouth is a great place to start in your hunt for a quality boarding kennel. Ask your friends and family about their experiences with any dog kennels they have used in the past. Your veterinarian may also be a fountain of knowledge in this regard. Once you have a few names, it’s time to do some background checking. Ring each kennel to determine their prices and availability, as there’s not much point in casing a kennel where there aren’t going to be any vacancies when you need them.

Checking a Boarding Kennel

When you visit check the basics such as cleanliness, ventilation, lighting, and temperature. What about the staff? Do they look like they enjoy their job and know what they are doing? The amount of exercise that your dog needs will vary depending on your dog’s breed. Ask about the food and the feeding times and if they can be personally adjusted for your animal. Many boarding kennels allow owners to bring their dog’s food if they are on a special diet. Also check their policy on vaccinations as you don’t want to expose your pets to dangerous diseases. Many boarding kennels also offer extra services such as medication dispensing, cleaning and grooming. It’s sometimes nice to know that your dog is going to smell clean and fresh and have nicely trimmed nails after they jump in the car when you pick them up.

Ultimately, while it may be a little heartbreaking to know that your dog is going to miss you and you them, at least you can enjoy your holiday knowing your pets are in a secure location, getting plenty of exercise, are being fed well, and are being looked after by someone who understands them. Your dog might just have more fun at the boarding kennel and need some relaxation time when you all get home!
