Beaglier Basic Information
The Beaglier may also be called a Beagalier, Begalier, Beagelier or Children’s Beagle.
These outgoing and gentle dogs are great for families with children older than toddlers, singles and active seniors. They have a similar nature to Beagles but are a little more laid back and gentle.
Beaglier Parent Breeds
The Beaglier’s parent breeds include the Beagle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
The Beagle
One of the parent breeds to the Beaglier is clearly the Beagle. The Beagle is a small-medium dog belonging to the hound group, specifically a scent hound. Most Beagles stand 30 – 40cm (13-16 inches) in height and weigh 8 – 18kg (18-37 pounds). They have long, low-set ears, medium-length muzzles, and large dark eyes. Their bodies are muscular and they wear a short and smooth coat. Although they may be seen with a variety of different colors and color-patterns, the classic Beagle coat is tan and white with a black saddle over the back. Beagles make good watch dogs because of their tendency to bark, but poor guard dogs because of their generally sweet disposition. They are wonderful with children and make great family dogs.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The other parent to the Beaglier is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed of dog, meaning it is generally small in size. Despite it being a toy breed the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is in fact one of the largest toy breeds. They are generally slightly smaller in size and weight to the Beagle, weighing around 5 – 10kg and standing at a height of 25 – 35cm tall. The coat is distinctively silky and smooth and it is characteristically seen in four color groups. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel may be ruby, a tricolor of tan, black, and white, Blenheim (red and white), or tan and black. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are often eager to please their families and affectionate. They are sweet, gentle, and patient. They typically do well with children and other animals.

What does a Beaglier look like?
Like both of their parents, the Beaglier is a smaller dog, often smaller than the average Beagle and favoring the size of their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent. A Beaglier will typically stand anywhere from 30 – 40cm (12-16 inches) in height and weigh from 6 – 15kg (12-33) pounds with the average being 35cm tall and 11kg. There is a large range for the breed both in size and other physical characteristics because the Beaglier is a designer dog and many such dogs often take after one parent more than the other. It is also common for Beagliers to strike a balance in resemblance between both the mother and the father. Like the Beagle, Beagliers generally have the same large and expressive eyes. Beagliers often, however, have shorter muzzles which more closely take after the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Their ears are sometimes slightly shorter in length but always folded like both parents’. The head consists of soft and generally delicate curves. The Beagle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel vary quite significantly with the texture and length of their coats, but Beagliers usually have shorter coats much like the Beagle but softer like the Cavalier. Sometimes a Beaglier will have a slightly longer and silky coat akin to the Charles Spaniel. Their coloring typically resembles the Beagle. Beagliers often appear in the traditional black, white, and tan tricolor of the Beagle, but they may also be solid black, black and white, black and tan, tan and white, red and white, tan, and ruby.

What is a Beaglier’s personality like?
Beagliers are most often described as being loyal, affectionate, playful, gentle, and overall good natured. They are often quite curious as well. Because of their sweet disposition and their tendency to be calm and loving, they often do very well with families or with singles. They love to be with their human companions and are often gentle and tolerant of children. They are very often recommended by veterinarians to families with children looking for a more relaxed version of a Beagle.
Even when under duress or provoked most Beagliers respond positively and remain well behaved. Beagliers are quite eager to please. In fact, They are at their happiest when they are with others because they are very social dogs. They also get along well with other animals and dogs. Like Beagles, Beagliers are great watch dogs tend to be confident and intelligent.
For the most part Beagliers are easy to train thanks to their huge love of food. Although Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can be protective of their food and Beagles can be stubborn, overall Beagliers are well-rounded dogs and generally lack behavioral problems. Beagliers are known for their formidable amount of energy when compared to the Cavalier but seem far less energetic than most Beagles. Just like the appearance of a Beaglier can favor either the Beagle or the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, it is important to note that their temperament can be closer to one parent or the other as well.

Are Beagliers a healthy breed?
Most Beagliers tend to be energetic, strong, and overall healthy with few specific health problems. The Beaglier has significantly fewer health risks due to breeding two different and distinct breeds of dogs. This genetic variation makes for healthier dogs that live longer. Despite the Beaglier’s overall healthy genetic makeup, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel brings a lot of health issues to the table which can sometimes afflict the Beaglier. A few of these problems include patellar luxation, hernias, mitral valve disease, and PRA. PRA stands for Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which leads to affected dogs slowly going blind (What is PRA? video). DNA Screening for PRA in just one parent allows the breeder to know if any pups in the litter will be affected by this condition later in life.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is also vulnerable to breathing problems due to its small snout, but the Beaglier is less likely to inherent these problems because of the longer muzzle in the Beagle. In order to have the healthiest Beaglier it is important to give them plenty of exercise, a healthy diet, and regular vet check-ups. It is also important to buy a Beaglier puppy from a breeder who DNA screens for PRA in their breeding program. A reliable breeder will also be around for the long term to help you with any issues and questions that may arise with a new puppy.

How long do Beagliers live for?
Most Beagliers can be expected to live anywhere between 12-15 years depending largely on their weight with overweight dogs having a shorter life expectancy.

How much exercise does a Beaglier need?
Although the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel generally does not require too much exercise, the Beagle was bred to be a working dog and is generally active. Due to the Beagle being part of a Beaglier’s heritage, it is important that a Beaglier has sufficient exercise. They are often happiest with an active owner or family in a home with a yard. While Beagliers will happily live in an apartment or unit, they will need to be taken on daily walks to keep them physically and mentally at their best.
Beaglier Grooming
How much grooming do Beagliers need?
The short answer is: not much! If the Beaglier takes more after its Beagle parent—and most Beagliers do—then they will need only minimal grooming. They typically do not shed as much as a Cavalier and are good pets for those who don’t like the idea and expense of maintaining a long coat on their dog. Most need only a small amount of upkeep regarding bathing and brushing. If the Beaglier takes after the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and has a long coat, they will need significantly more coat care.
